free hit counterSaturday, June 15, 2002. Rainy and overcast day. Temps around 60. Not a great day but it's all I had. Gas still a buck 33 at the line. Hasn't changed in months.

Decided to go out to Ayer and Fort Devens. The former Fort Devens. The trailer group that my grandparents belonged to used to camp at the Fort on Armed Forces Day weekend every year and I have good memories of going out there as a kid.

I was sorry to see that it was closed down.

The last time I was out there was a couple of years ago. At that time the place was pretty much intact from when it was open, at least as I remembered it.

This trip was quite different. I was shocked to see that street after street had been leveled. Housing totally gone. All that was left was holes and broken up concrete. It was sad. The base was such a nice place when it was open.

There was quite a railroad yard where containers are shipped from at the West end of the Fort. This yard is on the still used section of the WN&P. Now the Worcester and Ayer.

Aside from the housing on the East side being destroyed, it looked like all of the old wooden barracks were also destroyed.

The brick housing still stands. They were working on some of it, I couldn't tell if they were restoring or getting ready to tear it down.

Here is the day in pictures.. I recommend that you look through all of the pictures even if you're not interested in the Fort. There are rail pictures in the middle and at the end. < <
