Above we have a view of Alfred/Springvale border. If you look on the
left hand side of this picture, about 2/3 the way up you will see a row
of trees. That is the right of way. The trees go up almost to the road
then continue on the other side as they curve up and cross the road again.
The second crossing is Haley's Cut. A fairly deep cut. The road cused to
cross the cut on a bridge, the cut has been filled in where the bridge
was. The right of way continues towards a diagonal crossing at route 202.
The opposite arc that you see between the two crossings of route 224 was
made by four wheelers. They couldn't follow the right of way so they made
their own path.
Above we see the route 202 crossing. The right of way is quite straight
after it crosses 202. It is in this section that the grade is quite steep.
According to articles that I have read, this is where the ruling grade
was for west bound freights.
In this picture we see the line getting close to 202 then curving a
bit to the south in order to run parallel to 202. The road going south
off of 202 on the right side of this picture is Bennet rd.
In the above picture the right of way is barely visible. You see it
on the right as it gets close to 202 then curves a bit. You can just barely
make out the Bennet Rd crossing. You can see it a little bit as it heads
east. It should be very close to 202. It's possible that the road with
the houses on it was built on or very near the right of way.
Here we have the long diagonal crossing of 202. I have ridden my bike
in the sectiono on the south side of 202 and the right of way is not in
very good shape. It was ridable for a short distance. On the other side
of 202 it's plainly visible in this picture. The red pin in this picture
marks the beginning of Depot road. At the end of Depot Rd you can see the
freighthouse as well as the right of way. Unfortunately the freight house
is gone, having been torn down in the last year or so.
Here we are again at the freight house at the end of Depot Rd, looking
East the right of way is in reasonably good shape. You can make out some
houses along the right of way, some of which use the right of way to get
to their driveways.
Heading East towards Shakers Pond.
There we are at Shakers Pond. The right of way going right along the
edge of the pond. There was a bridge and the abutments are still there
where the pond drained into another pond on the other side of 202. A house
was built right on one of the old abutments.
Here is a better view of the right of way as it goes between the pond
and route 202. You can see the houses that were build on the right of way.
Route 202 rises sharply while the right of way stays closer to the
pond in order to avoid the steep grade that the road goes up.
Right of way visible as we head towards Waterboro.
