Decided to check out a tip from Eagle Eyes Lisa down in Reading, she told me about an abutment visible from 62 in North Reading. The Salem and Lowell line ran parallel, somewhat, to 62 in North Reading and in places you can still see the embankment.

I followed route 62 to Central Street, took a left and parked the car where there were some parking spaces on the left side of the road. The right of way was easy to find and I walked in a couple hundred feet and immediately saw the abutments Eagle Eyes was talking about.

The abutments as you can see were in good shape and the railroad embankment was too.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was quite a bit of the bridge left, at least the wooden supports for the bridge.
 

Some stone work has been pushed around and was laying at the bottom of the embankment. Even so the abutments are in pretty good shape.

Looking East, on the other side of Central St,  this is where the right of way used to be. Doesn't look like it now.

And now for something completely different. As far as I can tell, this is the Salem and Lowell right of way coming up on route 28. We are on the west side of 28 and this is where the line used to go under 28.

Here is a view of the Essex Railroad over in North Andover off of Marbleridge street. they have been clearing the right of way of any brush. Just in case something big is brewing I thought it would be prudent to get some pictures.
