The Merrimac Branch

The Former Merrimac Branch is interesting in that there is still iron down and that it covered two states. The line broke off from a long siding in Newton Jct. The line could be entered from either the East or the West. In later years the East Wye was taken out and access was only from the West. At Newton Junction there were two turntables, there was a third at the end of the Merrimac Branch in Merrimac.

Look closely at this map and you'll see how busy Newton Jct. once was. Four tracks crossing the main street. You can also see the Wye and how it was possible to enter the branch from either direction.

The Merrimac Branch had only two stations.  Newton and Merrimac.

Although technically not on the Merrimac Branch the  Newton Junction Station is close enough to warrant a picture.

The Merrimac station is long gone. The Newton Station was moved to Whittier St. in Newton and is now a home. The Newton Junction Station is gone but I was told that part of the house on the station site was a back room of the station.
