Here is an overview of the Wye area between the Lowell and Lawrence and the Salem and Lowell. You can make out the line coming in from the West, you can see the line to Andover and Lawrence as well as the Salem and Lowell heading off to the lower right hand corner of this picture.
Closer view of the wye area.
You can just barely make out the right of way in this picture. I include
the picture only for continuity with the one before it and the one after.
The right of way that is white going from center top to lower right is
a power line right of way. The present freight main can be see crossing
near the top. Route 93 is on the right.
Salem and Lowell barely visible from the top left hand corner
to the bottom right. In this picture you can see Burtts Crossing, on Shawsheen
Road as well as another crossing on South Road. If you look just
to the right of the South Rd crossing you will see a farm. The railroad
went through this farm. You used to be able to drive down the right of
way to a paintball place at the end but last summer when I was down there
it was closed off. I spoke with the farmer and his wife and they were interested
in learning more about the railroad and indicated that at a future time
I may be able to take a drive down the right of way. We shall see.
This picture shows from Shawsheen St, across South Rd, and straight as an arrow to Wilmington Jct.
Closer view of the farm, South Rd, and the right of way.
Close up view of the right of way between the farm and Wilmington Jct. There appear to be other roads in the area.
Close up of the line as it begins to curve to the South. I note another road or path coming into the ROW.
Wilmington Junction. You can see where the line crossed over the present freight main as well as a line that would allow West bound S&L traffic to go North or East on the Boston and Maine.
Closeup of Wilmington Junction.
These aerial photos show that quite a bit of the right of way between Tewksbury and Wilmington Jct's is still intact. It may not be easy to get to in some cases but at least it is still there.
