The WN&P in Alfred
The WN&P parallels 202 in Alfred for a bit. This section along 202 has a steep grade and for westbound jobs this was the ruling grade for the entire line. If you look at the line on the very left hand side of the map you will see that it runs along the side of a hill and the contour lines are close together indicating a steep change in grade for the hill. You can see the tracks themselves crossing over a contour line. I bike rode this section and the grade is very very noticable.

After the line crossed over Bennet Rd, heading east, there used to be an embankment. It's been bulldozed away. The east side abutment for a bridge carrying the line over Trafton Brook is still there. The right of way continues on, it goes behind a mobile home park where for a short distance it was impassable. You can still see where the line siding was going over 202. The right of way continues to be in good shape up to Depot rd where up until sometime in 2002 or 2001 the freight house used to stand. Unfortunately it was recently torn down. The station platform is still visible in the opposite side of the right of way.

If you continue on past Depot rd, the right of way is someone's driveway. There is a block signal base and the owners found a telegraph pole and are using the arms and part of the pole to hold up their mailbox. After you get to their driveway proper the right of way continues straight, no passable by car though.

Going up the next street that crosses the right of way it is again used as a driveway. One homeowner had to replace the bridge to get to his house. The right of way is in good shape going in both directions.

Heading up by Shakers Pond there are some bridge abutments where the line went by the pond and a house has been built right on top of them.

The line appears intact all the way up to the Waterboro line.

Here are some pictures taken in Alfred. The first few are from 2000, the rest were taken in 2002.

This map shows the WN&P as it crosses Hay Brook and into Alfred. On the Springvale side note the sharp S curve. The right of way goes under 224 in what is known as Haleys Cut then it crosses 224 again at grade.
