Travel Log 5-30-03
(I have attempted to optimize this update for dialup users.)

Had to go to Amesbury on business and on my way down 107A I decided that I would finally stop and take some pictures of the abandoned ski slope, before the buildings are torn down and the machinery taken away. I was short on time but it only took 2 minutes to snap some pictures from the road.
The ski slope is on the side of Pow-wow hill. The hill with several towers on it for cellular and other radio communications.
I don't know how long the place has been abandoned. I thought it was operating in the 80's, maybe not.

This photo is an overview of what's there as far as buildings. There is a little shack to the right of this picture. If you look on the left side you can see one of the towers that hold up the cable pulling people up the hill.

Here is a closer view of the tower holding up the cable.

Poles going up the hill. I'm not sure if this was a rope tow or if you rode up the hill. I think the poles are a little high for a rope tow, must have been a ride up the hill.

Shack on the right side of the property.

View of center buildings.

My next stop was the Merrimack River RR bridge in Salisbury. I wanted to see if I could get some more pictures of the pivot point on the bridge. I used a tripod and the optical and digital zooms to get in as close as I could.

Here is a closeup, you can see that there appears to be a lot of broken wood and you can clearly see that there are some gears in there as well.

This picture shows the gears inside the bridge as well as another gear just above the stonework.

Another view of the gears inside the bridge. It appears that the area housing the gears was enclosed in wood.

In order to make this update more palatable on a dialup I am sticking to just the best pictures and a relatively few pictures compared to what I normally post. I may put a picture gallery of all of the pictures taken today on this weekend.

Comments on this shortened update are welcome.
